[T]he huge retailer Target is opening its first Vermont store in South Burlington Oct. 21, ending Vermont’s reign as the only U.S. state without a Target.

The South Burlington store at the University Mall on Dorset Street will be one of Target’s smaller 60,000-square-foot stores, which “allow Target to open in areas where a full-size Target might not fit,” the company said in a press release.

The average Target store is 130,000 square feet. The stores carry clothing, food, health and personal care items, household goods, and food and beverages.

Target, which is based in Minneapolis, is the second-largest retailer in the U.S., after Walmart, according to the company’s website. It has more than 1,800 U.S. stores and 350,000 workers worldwide. The company said its shoppers have a median age of 40 and a median household income of $64,000. The company is doing well: The website Seeking Alpha reported that Target’s same-store sales had increased 5 percent in the last three months to mid-September, double those of Walmart’s U.S. stores.

“Target is continuously exploring possible locations for new stores and is currently focused on small-format stores located in dense urban and suburban neighborhoods as well as near college campuses,” Target spokesperson Jacqueline DeBuse said in a prepared statement.

There are no plans for a second Vermont store, she said.
