[B]URLINGTON โ€” Norwich Town Manager Herbert A. Durfee III received a 30- to 60-day suspended jail sentence and was ordered to pay $492 in fines and surcharges on Tuesday after pleading no contest to negligent operation with alcohol involved for his role in a crash along Interstate 89 last winter.

Durfee and his lawyer declined comment after the plea hearing on the misdemeanor charge as they left Vermont Superior Court in Burlington.

The 55-year-old Durfee originally had been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol during the crash at about 1 a.m. on Feb. 10. Vermont State Police said his car crashed into a Vermont Agency of Transportation plow truck on Interstate 89 in Colchester.

Police said in an affidavit that he had an estimated blood alcohol level of 0.111 percent, above the 0.08 legal threshold for adult drivers in Vermont.

Durfee, who lives in Grand Isle, suffered a collapsed lung and other injuries in the crash, and returned to work in early April.
