[T]UNBRIDGE — Edith Whitney, 87, who was shot outside of her house last Saturday night in an apparent accidental firing, died Monday night.
Vermont State Police responded to the call at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and conducted interviews with people who were shooting firearms nearby. No link between the individuals and the death of Edith Whitney has been confirmed.
โOur investigators identified a number of people who were shooting a firearm in the vicinity of Ms. Whitneyโs home at the time that she was struck by what appears to be a stray bullet,โ said Adam Silverman, a spokesperson for Vermont State Police.
A firearm, ammunition and used ammunition casings were all discovered at the crime scene. None of the items were confirmed to have been in use during the shooting and no bullets or fragments have been recovered from Whitney’sย body yet.
Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is probing the matter.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Those details may not be released because in New Hampshire autopsies are not considered public record.
โWe have not recovered any projectiles that have struck Ms. Whitney so thatโs an analysis that we have been so far unable to do,โ said Silverman.
As of now, law enforcement has deemed the shooting an accident and has not charged anyone with a crime.
