[B]urlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo was injured in a single bicycle crash in the Adirondacks on Saturday.

Del Pozo sustained a head injury and broken ribs, according to a press release issued by the Burlington mayorโ€™s office.

The chief is being treated in the intensive care unit at University of Vermont Medical Center and is expected to be hospitalized for a sustained period of time, according to the city.

Doctors are optimistic del Pozo will fully recover.

Mayor Miro Weinberger said in an interview that he doesnโ€™t know all the details yet, but it appears that del Pozo was biking on a road in Keene, New York, near Lake Placid when the accident occurred. No other vehicle was involved.

โ€œHe was on a road heโ€™s biked on many times,โ€ Weinberger said. โ€œItโ€™s a downhill and he picked up significant speed.โ€

As of Sunday, doctors were assessing del Pozoโ€™s condition, the mayor said.

Deputy Chief Jan Wright is serving as interim chief of the Burlington Police Department while del Pozo recovers.

In a statement, Weinberger said his thoughts are with the chief and his family.

โ€œChief del Pozo has done so much for theย community, and we look forward to him returning to command,โ€ Weinberger said. โ€œUntil then, I have full confidence that the Burlington Police Department will continue to keep the city safe and perform at the high, effective level that Burlingtonians expect.โ€
