[V]TDigger welcomes three new editors to the newsroom team: News Editor Colin Meyn, Projects Editor Jim Welch and Environmental Editor Ellen Bartlett.
Colin Meyn, news editor, spent most of his career in Cambodia, where he was a reporter and editor at English-language newspapers The Cambodia Daily and The Phnom Penh Post. He most recently worked for the Southeast Asia Globe, a regional current affairs magazine. He is a native of Maine and studied journalism at Northwestern University.
Jim Welch, projects editor, is a former Montpelier bureau chief and executive editor at the Burlington Free Press. For many years, he served as deputy managing editor at USA Today and most recently worked as a speechwriter for the president of the American Bar Association. He has a degree in government from Georgetown University and a master’s in leadership from its business school. He also served as a professional in residence at the University of Iowa.
Ellen Bartlett, environmental editor, started in journalism in her home state, as a reporter for the Burlington Free Press and then WCAX-TV. She was a staff writer for the Miami Herald, Dallas Times-Herald and the Boston Globe, and a longtime South Africa correspondent for the Globe and other publications. Her reporting has appeared in the New York Times, New Scientist, Washington Post, U.S. News & World Report, Toronto Globe & Mail, Marie Claire, Mail&Guardian and Bethesda Magazine, among others. She has a BA from McGill University.
Anne Galloway, editor in chief of VTDigger, says beefing up the newsroom’s editing staff has deepened the quality of the organization’s gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Vermont Legislature.
In addition, the additional editorial capacity has made it possible for VTDigger to publish three major projects this spring, including:
More than Luck? A VTDigger investigation into big wins on small Vermont lottery games
Making the Grade: A special investigation into Vermont school testing data,
Rough Landing: Inside the years long debate over the F-35
“I am very pleased to have three new pros on our editing team who are all committed to VTDigger’s in-depth and investigative reporting,” Galloway said. “Colin, Ellen and Jim work with other members of our 15-member editing and reporting team to edit stories, strategize on coverage and mentor our young reporters.”
Meyn, Welch and Bartlett join a team of five VTDigger editors and producers, including Senior Editor and Reporter Mark Johnson, Editor and Reporter Dave Gram, Copyeditor Cate Chant, Multi-Media Producer Mike Dougherty, and Editor Anne Galloway.
