[A] political organization launched by Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed Carina Driscoll in the Burlington mayorโ€™s race.

Our Revolution, a political organization launched from Sandersโ€™ 2016 presidential bid, announced Friday that it was endorsing Driscoll in her bid for the mayorโ€™s office. Driscoll is Sandersโ€™s stepdaughter.

Our Revolution spokesperson Diane May said Sanders had no role in the endorsement.

โ€œSen. Sanders is the inspiration for our organization and has no role in our day to day activities, including endorsements,โ€ May said. โ€œCarina earned her endorsement by running as a progressive candidate who worked to get the support of the progressive leaders in her city.โ€

According to May, local groups first make the decision to endorse a candidate, then they can recommend the national group back a candidate as well.

Our Revolution lauded Driscollโ€™s experience serving on the school board, city council and in the Vermont Legislature.

โ€œIf elected, Carina will push for more transparent government, protect community assets, and invest in Burlington schools,โ€ executive director Shannon Jackson said in a statement announcing the endorsement.

Our Revolution will send out texts and emails, and help with phone banks and fundraising, according to May.

In a statement, Driscoll said she was honored to receive the endorsement on the same weekend as the Womenโ€™s March.

โ€œI am Bernieโ€™s daughter, and am one of thousands of people across this country who have been inspired by him to lead,โ€ she said. โ€œI belong in this political movement in my own right and I am proud to be part of a wave of progressive women leaders running for office in this challenging time.โ€

Driscoll campaign manager Elise Greaves reiterated in an email that Sanders does not have a role in selecting the candidates Our Revolution supports.

Greaves said Driscoll has also applied for endorsement from groups including Emilyโ€™s List, She Should Run and Democracy for America. She already received backing from Rights and Democracy VT and the Burlington Progressive Party.

โ€œEndorsements which include grassroots organizing and support from organizations like these are welcome,โ€ Greaves said.
