[S]tate police say a woman was found dead along the side of a state highway in Lyndonville on Saturday morning.

Mattie Lynne Hale, 46, was walking along Route 5 toward West Burke Friday night, according to a report from WCAX. Her body was found the next morning.

An investigation by the Vermont State Police showed that Hale was struck by a vehicle and sustained multiple injuries. Evidence from the crash suggested the vehicle was a silver Ford Fiesta, police said, and they later located the car at a home nearby.

Police determined from surveillance video and interviews that Gary Hale, 41, of Lyndonville, no relation to Mattie Lynne Hale, was driving at the time of the accident. Katrina Haslam, 47, was a passenger in the vehicle.

Gary Hale was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting and was held at the Northeast Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury for lack of $15,000 bail.

Haslam was charged with accessory after the fact and was released.

Gary Hale and Haslam will be arraigned in Caledonia Superior Court today.
