[A]mazon is becoming central to the American shopping experience, and Vermont is not immune.

Stacy Mitchell and Olivia LaVecchia of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance will discuss how the giant internet retailer is impacting Vermont businesses, jobs and communities at two events next week.

The events, sponsored by Phoenix Books, VTDigger and Northshire Bookstore, will be held 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Burlington and 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Northshire Bookstore in Manchester. Fran Stoddard, former Vermont PBS and VPR host, will moderate the Burlington event; Anne Galloway, founder of VTDigger, will moderate the Manchester talk.

Mitchell and LaVecchia will discuss their in-depth study of Amazon, how policymakers can address Amazon’s market power, and what citizens can do to support a more diverse, equitable and locally rooted economy, even when they’re shopping online.

“Amazon has quietly positioned itself at the center of a growing share of our daily transactions,” said Mitchell. “Today, two-thirds of all U.S. households are subscribed to the membership program Amazon Prime, more than half of all online shopping searches start directly on Amazon, and Amazon captures nearly one in every two dollars that Americans spend online.”

Amazon’s growing dominance stands as threat to local retailers and the communities they support, Mitchell and LaVecchia say.
