[T]he head of Vermont’s office of the FBI will leave his post to become the executive director of the Vermont Lottery Commission.

Daniel Rachek has led the FBI office for six years and has been with the bureau for 22 years. He will start the new job Nov. 13.

The position has been vacant since the former executive director left a year ago when moving out of state.

Rachek is a certified public accountant who led in-depth financial investigations with the FBI, according to a news release from Gov. Phil Scott’s office. Rachek supervised 20 employees.

Recent FBI actions affecting Vermont have included an investigation of a land deal at the now-defunct Burlington College and a probe related to alleged embezzlement in the small Northeast Kingdom town of Coventry.

Rachek has also performed community outreach and held conferences with other regulatory agencies and corporations, according to the news release. He has also led financial workshops for municipalities and major financial institutions.

“I’m honored to join Gov. Scott’s team and to maximize the lottery’s contributions to Vermont’s economic future by supporting education funding,” Rachek said in the news release.

The Vermont Lottery Commission is a state-led agency that sells and markets lottery products and sends the profits to the state’s education fund, which helps pay for public schools.

Scott has proposed merging the Vermont Lottery Commission with the Department of Liquor Control. The two small agencies are now on a fast track toward merging, but the final outcome will require the Legislature’s approval.

“Danny’s extensive public service and financial experience provides a level of expertise and a professional commitment that will set the standard in the lottery’s future efforts,” Scott said in the announcement.

“Danny’s combined experience with the FBI and as a certified public accountant uniquely qualifies him to lead the department,” Scott said. “He will set the highest possible standards and integrity for the mission of the Vermont Lottery.”
