BURLINGTON โ€” A much-maligned five-way intersection in the South End is being temporarily reconfigured as part of a โ€œpop-upโ€ demonstration Thursday through Friday at noon.

The intersection of Howard and St. Paul streets, where South Winooski Avenue comes to an end, will be reconfigured based on โ€œdesign elements for this busy intersection as proposed by city officials earlier this year,โ€ according to a news release from AARP Vermont.

AARP is sponsoring the demonstration project along with the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, and the bike and pedestrian advocacy group Local Motion.

โ€œThe goal is to help neighbors, planners and city officials envision what a new community space and safer intersection could look like,โ€ the release says.

The project has city approval, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Miro Weinberger.

In addition to the intersectionโ€™s borders being altered for safety, the groups will temporarily install benches, tables and planters.

The groups are hosting a community discussion today โ€” Wednesday โ€” at 5 p.m. at ArtsRiot on Pine Street about the demonstration project and other ways to create low-cost community spaces.
