WILMINGTON — Vermont Senior Game Warden Rich Watkin says a small dog was killed early Wednesday morning by a bear.
“I believe it was very much circumstantial, but tragic all the same,” said Watkin.
The incident occurred near Chimney Hill in Wilmington. The dog was with the owner and on a leash.
Residents were advised in a town newsletter on Friday to be mindful that “we live in an area populated by black blear.” Whistles or other noise-making objects should be carried when walking at night.
“These wild animals are large and very strong and for the most part shy away from human contact,” the email stated. “However, at this time of year before their natural food becomes more abundant, they will venture closer to civilization in search of food [as evident by any rubbish not in protective bins and destruction of bird feeders.] This is also the time when they have young cubs [usually born over the winter during hibernation] and are very protective of them.”
Other suggestions included removal of bird feeders, cleaning barbecue grills and making sure garbage is kept in secured bins. Pets should be fed inside and kept on leashes.
