The deadline for state and federal personal income tax returns is Tuesday, April 18.

The Vermont Department of Taxes has issued a press release reminding taxpayers that April 18 is also the deadline for homestead declarations, property tax adjustment claims and renter rebate claims.

Applications for an extension for filing personal income tax returns are also due April 18.

An extension prolongs the deadline to Oct. 16, 2017.

Taxes, however, must be paid on April 18, whether an extension is sought or not. Otherwise, taxpayers face potential penalties and fines.

The tax department recommends that taxpayers use e-file software. Free File software vendors can be found here.

To file online homestead declarations, property tax adjustment claims, renter rebate claims and requests for extensions, go to www.myVTax.vermont.gov

The average time for processing is 6 to 8 weeks for electronic returns. Paper-filed returns take 8 to 10 weeks to processing.
