[H]oward Dean announced Thursday that heโ€™s running for the top Democratic party slot via Tweet.

The former Vermont governor and chair of the Vermont Democratic National Committee told followers: “The dems need organization and focus on the young. Need a fifty State strategy and tech rehab. I am in for chairman again.”

Dean ran the DNC from 2005 to 2009 and served as governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003.

He is credited with helping the Democratic Party solidify its base across the nation in the runup to the 2008 presidential election with his 50-state strategy, especially in states that are Republican strongholds.

Dean told Seven Days that he believes the Democrats need to provide โ€œa real alternativeโ€ to Donald Trump. He doesnโ€™t want the title, he says, โ€œI just want to fix the place.โ€

While Dean is considered to be a formidable challenger, competition for the job will be stiff.

Sen. Bernie Sanders is supporting Rep. Keith Ellison for the post, according to Politico. Ellison, an African American representative from Minnesota, was one of Sandersโ€™ surrogates in his bid for the presidential nomination.

Other contenders include New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison, and former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
