The race for governor in Vermont is close with just over two weeks to go before the election. A poll this week by Vermont Public Radio had the two major party candidates, Republican Phil Scott and Democrat Sue Minter, in a virtual dead heat.

In this edition of Digger Dialogue, VPR political reporter Peter Hirschfeld joins VTDiggerโ€™s Mark Johnson and Jasper Craven to break down the numbers and discuss what the campaigns are likely to focus on as they head down the home stretch. In addition to who Vermonters plan to vote for, the poll also asked what issues are of major concern.

The three reporters also discussed the poll results in several other statewide races, including lieutenant governor, attorney general and the U.S. Senate.

They also reflected on the possible reasons behind the poll results that found the media to be held in low esteem. In the VPR poll, more than half of those who responded viewed the press unfavorably.

The show also included a recount of Hirschfeldโ€™s heroic efforts helping Johnson and why Craven advises staying away from loud speakers.

Digger Dialogue is a weekly feature focusing on news, public policy and people of interest.
