U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has said he will participate in three debates this fall with his Republican opponent, Scott Milne.

Leahy, who was first elected in 1974, maintained he was following a “precedent established in previous elections.”

Leahy agreed Friday to participate in debates on Vermont PBS and Burlington-based Channel 17 Town Meeting Television, and on Vermont Public Radio. The two television stations invite all the candidates who appear on the ballot. VPR News Director John Dillon said the radio station would have a one-on-one debate between Leahy and Milne in early November.

Milne had challenged Leahy to debate him at least four times on statewide television on the three major commercial stations and PBS.
