An envelope containing a suspicious substance prompted an evacuation of the courthouse in downtown Barre on Wednesday afternoon.
The envelope was delivered to the Washington County family and criminal court Wednesday, according to Washington County State’s Attorney Scott Williams.
The building was evacuated shortly after 4 p.m. and remained under an evacuation order while a hazardous materials team was called in to confirm the substance was not dangerous.
One court employee was isolated as a precaution and was awaiting testing, according to Williams.
“While I don’t believe that it is any kind of a dangerous substance, we’re taking the precaution,” Williams said.
