BURLINGTON – Sewage overflows into Lake Champlain have prompted a vigil for clean water.

According to a press release from Lake Champlain International, there have been 84 waste dumps into the lake since the beginning of the year.

The waste includes human sewage, the release stated, which allows harmful bacteria and metals into the water and damages the ecosystems within the lake. The sewage overflows are the result of poor waste water infrastructure in cities and towns along the lake.

The nonprofit group is organizing a vigil “to mourn” the condition of the lake 7 p.m. July 21 at Burlington City Hall Park.
