BURLINGTON — The suspect in a Monday shooting in Colchester pleaded not guilty Thursday to aggravated assault and attempted second-degree murder.

The Superior Court judge ordered the suspect, Patrick Bombard, held until a bail hearing later this month.

Bombard, 29, is accused of shooting Travis Carl, 36, twice during an altercation at the victim’s apartment at 106 College Parkway, across from Saint Michael’s College. Carl was treated at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Bombard fled the scene, and police later released his image, warning the public he was armed and dangerous. A warrant was issued for his arrest Tuesday, and Bombard turned himself in to Burlington police Wednesday.

The Burlington Free Press reported that Carl contacted its newsroom and told a reporter the altercation took place over a $70 debt.

Morgan True was VTDigger's Burlington bureau chief covering the city and Chittenden County.
