BURLINGTON — The iconic Vermont restaurant Bove’s Cafe will close its doors after 75 years later this month, but the family that has run it for three generations announced Monday they will open a manufacturing facility in Milton to produce a line of retail pasta sauces locally.

Bove’s of Vermont has already broken ground on the 15,000 square-foot facility and they expect to start making sauce at the new location next year. Bove’s already makes frozen meatballs and lasagna in Shelburne. Opening the new facility will allow the company to keep its longtime Vermont employees and add 10 to 15 new jobs, according to a report in the Burlington Free Press.

“The Bove family has deep roots in Vermont, and through the support of state and local officials, plus the community who’s stood with us since 1941, we are proud to be able to grow those roots here in Vermont,” said Mark Bove, the current owner, in a statement. “This expansion means we can make our signature products locally, keep the employees who have been with us for years, as well as create new jobs so we can expand the Bove team.”

Lt. Gov Phil Scott was among several politicians in attendance at an event at the cafe to announce the new facility. Scott is seeking the Republican nomination for governor.

“When a signature Vermont company makes a long-term investment in the state, it’s a win for all of us. Not only does it create jobs and opportunities for the next generation, but it sends the message to the rest of the country that Vermont can be a great place to set up shop and grow a business,” Scott said in a statement.
