Police are investigating human remains found near a major intersection in Colchester.

Vermont State Troopers responded to the southbound Exit 16 off-ramp of I-89 Wednesday after a passer-by called in reporting what appeared to be skeletal remains.

According to a police statement Wednesday afternoon, detectives confirmed that the remains are human. WCAX reported the remains appeared to be that of a male.

Police say that the condition of the skeleton suggests that it has been in the area “for a number of years.”

The chief medical examiner’s office will now study the remains, and will try to identify them. Meanwhile, state and local law enforcement are investigating and are trying to identify the individual.
