The Vermont Attorney General’s Office has scheduled a second public hearing on a proposed rule to label food products that contain genetically modified ingredients.

The hearing will be held from 5-6 p.m. Feb. 4 in Room 10 of the Statehouse in Montpelier, AG Bill Sorrell said in a news release.

The Vermont Legislature passed a law last year requiring that products containing genetically engineered ingredients be labeled beginning in 2017. The first public hearing on the rule-making process was held in October.

โ€œPublic comment is a vital part of the rule-making process,โ€ Sorrell said, โ€œand when we heard from various folks that they had not understood the original timeline for comment, or were worried they wouldnโ€™t get comments in before the deadline, we decided it best to provide an extended opportunity to make their formal comments. This will move the rule-making process forward with maximum input from industry and consumers.โ€

The deadline to submit written comments was extended to Feb. 12, the release said.

Comments on GMO labeling may be emailed to ago.gefoodlabelingrule@state.vt.us. More information on the rule is available at the attorney general’s website.
