Vermont Leads, a single-payer advocacy group, announced Wednesday a list of candidates it has endorsed for the General Election.

The organization is backing 61 incumbents and 12 challengers in House races, as well as 16 incumbents in the Senate and six challengers.

“On Election Day, I believe the vast majority of Vermonters are going to have the opportunity to vote for a candidate who supports universal health care. I don’t believe residents of any other state in the nation can make that claim,” said a statement from Peter Sterling, Vermont Leads director.

Endorsements hinge on whether a candidate voted for Act 48, the landmark law putting Vermont on a path toward a universal publicly financed health care program, or satisfactorily completed its survey. The only exceptions are candidates who have taken a subsequent position against meeting the goals of Act 48, according to the statement.

The 501(c)(4) will support candidates through direct donations, get-out-the-vote work and volunteer recruitment.

In addition, the group will continue its public education efforts around single-payer and health care reform.
