The state’s natural gas utility announced Monday it will begin planning for the third phase of its pipeline extension through Addison County to Rutland.

Vermont Gas is exploring routes that would connect a proposed pipeline from the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, New York, to Rutland. The company aims to bring natural gas to Rutland by 2020.

Vermont Gas has started construction on the first phase of the project to connect Chittenden and Franklin counties to Middlebury. Its second phase of the extension from Middlebury to New York still needs state and federal approval.

The company hopes to finish a multi-town planning process for the route by next spring, according to a news release.
