BENNINGTON — A Bennington man was shot after threatening officers with a knife at the Bennington Police Department on Tuesday night, state police said.

Police say Gregory Filo, 42, entered the lobby of the police station at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday with a friend. According to a state police news release, a dispatcher saw Filo holding a knife and making stabbing gestures toward the friend. Police say the dispatcher summoned Bennington police officers, who then said Filo brandished the knife in a threatening manner.

Police said Filo ignored their orders to drop the knife and approached them, leading one officer to fire one shot that struck Filo. He was taken to Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center, where he is in stable condition, police said.

The officer was placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. His name was not released pending further investigation.
