Gov. Peter Shumlin’s 33-minute speech about Vermont’s full-blown heroin crisis has garnered national attention.

On Wednesday, the governor made the “public health crisis” of opiate addiction the sole focus of his state of the state address to Vermont’s General Assembly in Montpelier.

Three national news organizations subsequently featured news stories about the governor’s characterization of opiate addiction in Vermont as an “epidemic.”
