Gov. Peter Shumlin made the opiate addiction “epidemic” the main subject of his State of the State address on Jan. 8. Shumlin said the state must take steps to treat substance abuse as a public health problem. His administration plans to invest in prevention and treatment starting with the elimination of the state’s waiting list for methadone.
