Vermont Gas Systems (VTGas) is proposing to reroute sections of a planned natural gas pipeline extension in Addison and Chittenden counties.
The decision to change the route of the $70 million, 42-mile transmission line came after strong opposition from the towns of Monkton and Hinesburg. Both towns took issue with the line running through residential areas of their towns and requested VTGas build the line along the utility transmission corridor owned by VELCO, like the company is planning to do in other towns.
On Jan. 25, VTGas spokesman Steve Wark said the company was listening to the towns and was willing to reroute the pipeline.
“After meetings with both communities, Vermont Gas will propose route refinements primarily into or adjacent to the VELCO corridor, where permitted,” he said in a public statement. “We believe the proposed route refinements will address the Monkton and Hinesburg Town Selectboards’ requests.”
According to Wark, the company plans to submit a supplemental filing to the Public Service Board at the end of February to address these changes. VTGas submitted its initial application for the project to the board at the end of December.
