Democrat Don Collins beat Dustin Degree, a Republican, for the second of two open seat Franklin County Senate seats on Tuesday. Collins won by a larger margin of victory than he initially did on election night. Degree requested the recount after losing to Collins by 25 votes.

The tally this time around, according to Franklin County Clerk James Pelkey, has Collins 35 votes ahead of Degree. The victory cements the Democratsโ€™ dominance in the Senate where they now hold 23 seats to the GOPโ€™s seven seats.

There were six contenders for two senate seats in Franklin County; Norm McAllister, a Republican, secured the other seat with 7,732 votes. A total of 39,160 votes were cast.

Had he been elected, Degree, who is 27, would have been the youngest senator in the state.
