The search committee winnowed the applicant pool for Vermont’s first secretary of education down to a handful of candidates during its meeting Wednesday.
“We are moving ahead quite nicely,” said Stephan Morse, chair of the State Board of Education and a member of the committee.
Morse said the committee received 20 to 25 applications and during the meeting today, they selected five or six to advance to the interview stage. The committee aims to schedule interviews by the end of the month, and it plans to seek out education stakeholders to take part in them. This timeframe will keep them on track to recommend three candidates to the governor in December, who will then make the final decision in January.
Due to confidentiality constraints, Morse could not reveal information about individual applicants but he said they received a number of “good quality” candidates both from out of state and within Vermont. The current Commission of Education Armando Vilaseca publicly stated that he planned to apply for the position.
