[B]URLINGTON — A 19-year-old University of Vermont student was found dead Saturday morning in Burlington. Preliminary autopsy results indicate he died of hypothermia exacerbated by acute intoxication, according to Burlington police.
UVM identified the first-year student as Connor Gage of Little Falls, New York, on Sunday morning. Gage was a neuroscience major and was a member of the university’s Wellness Environment.
The student was found unresponsive in the snow in the back parking lot of a business on North Winooski Avenue and pronounced dead at the scene. The Burlington police and fire departments responded to the scene at 10:48 a.m. Saturday, according a police department press release.
Police do not suspect foul play, and believe Gage was cutting through the parking lot during the early morning Saturday when he was stopped by a fence. The temperature was between -1 and -4 degrees, and police said the student was not wearing adequate clothing for the extreme cold.
Police say the man had attended two off-campus events on Friday, leaving the second at 12:45 a.m. Saturday. About 20 minutes later a security camera recorded him near 294 North Winooski Ave., appearing “in a way consistent with intoxication and/or hypothermia,” the Monday evening press release said. Complete toxicology reports will not be complete for several weeks.
In a statement Sunday, UVM said it would be offering counseling services to members of the campus community.
