A body was found in the North Branch of the Winooski River in downtown Montpelier on Thursday.

Montpelier police said they recovered the body of Ulysses McLean, 44, of Barre, who was face down in water about 1 foot deep.

Police said the cause of McLean’s death is unknown but does not appear suspicious. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will carry out an autopsy.

McLean’s body was found shortly after noon by a group from Montpelier High School that was preparing to canoe from the mouth of the North Branch River.
