Copley Hospital in Morrisville started preliminary work this week on a new surgical unit the hospital plans to open in late 2017.

The surgical unit will include three operating rooms, one procedure room, central sterile and processing, pre-operative and post-operative beds, a waiting area, a consultation room, and expanded storage, according to a press release.

The hospital is working with engineers and architects to reconfigure the parking lot and relocate underground telephone lines, according to a press release. The hospital says construction will start this coming summer and take 18 months.

The hospital received a permit in February from regulators at the Green Mountain Care Board. The new unit will be separate from the hospital’s current operating rooms, which were built in 1979.

“This means we can continue to offer high quality surgical services in our current area while the new surgical suite is built,” Mel Patashinick, the CEO of the hospital, said in a press release. “The new suite will ensure that Copley will be able to meet the future needs of our community with an even better experience for patients and families.”

The surgical unit will be 19,560 feet and is estimated to cost $12.5 million. The hospital is financing the surgical facility with a combination of working capital, a loan, and is seeking $3.2 million in donations.
