  1. A go-nowhere solution…again. Oh look, and it will cost us as well. Mark Donka for Congress.

  2. Did I miss it???? Did Welch acknowledge the $447,000 salary of the UVM president?

Why is it that those at the top in hospital administration, universities, etc get a free pass on excessive salaries? Just ain’t right! Where’s the outrage?

  3. Maybe we will get rid of enough clueless politicians like our congressman and we can start to see meaningful reforms instead of the usual dog and pony show.

  4. Typical situation. Government causes the problem by providing loans and grants for students. This allows colleges and universities to increase tuition to pay for expensive administrators and staff and build new buildings like athletic facilities and student centers while avoiding the market reality that middle class families cannot afford this any more.

Kids come out of school loaded with debt that they cannot discharge, even in bankruptcy, because federal law prohibits it. Instead, they get their wages garnished. But we can’t blame the greedy banks for this because the federal government now runs the student loan business.

Now the federal government will come up with a new “program” to solve the problem it helped create in the first place.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
