  1. “She suggests that the state could combine populations between the Vermont State Hospital and the Department of Corrections.”

With all due respect to Ms. Rowe: Prisons are not designed, structured, staffed as hospitals. Corrections has a full plate.

“It’s common for patients to punch, kick or spit at state employees who work at the hospital.” Other than identify the problem, what is management doing to protect employees? And is it working?

  2. Word is that Terri Rowe, outgoing executive director of Vermont State Hospital (VSH), is scheduled to be a guest on the Mark Johnson Show on WDEV Radio Monday morning.

  3. “It’s common for patients to punch, kick or spit at state employees who work at the hospital.” I once saw a fight start because a patient took a cup of milk out of the kitchen without a lid on it. The staff person who started had been at work for over 12 hours on a double shift.

There are good hard working staff at VSH, but there are also too many staff who won’t do their jobs. The new executive director is going to have to clean house. When I worked there I had an office-mate who came in at noon every day for four years. When I reported it, the executive director and chief of services told me they had no idea it was going on. In all those years I never got a performance evaluation either. The VSH administration has been negligent.

  4. anybody that would recommend the transference of the severely mentally ill into the prison system is a part of the p r o b l e m …but then again it has been happening for years now. why not fix what is wrong with the hospitals instead of abandoning the most severely ill? maybe because those least able o help themselves or to speak for themselves are at the mercy of a broken mental health system.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
