  1. It seems to me after reading both this and the related story that the canteen was targeted awhile ago as the sacrificial lamb for this round of budget cuts.
Looks like they wanted Mr Sinclair out of the way so they could force feed the public their version of the numbers unhampered by ‘whistleblowers’.
The reasons why are open to speculation. Maybe the canteen instead of the fatcats at the top taking salary cuts or having to make tough decisions that actually make sense?
How about making the exec in charge of it all accountable for the apparently shoddy way that facility is run?
Great reporting, Anne. Sometimes the vulnerable need a voice.

  2. I know the canteen at the State Hospital. As an employee of the Agency of Human Services from 1996 to 2001, I purchased lunch at the canteen several times a week. I saw first-hand how important the canteen was to patients at the hospital. I also saw how others ( state employees, myself included) frequented the canteen. One of the misleading arguments used to support the closure of the canteen is that it only serves patients. That is blatently wrong. The canteen was utuilized by many others in the buildings connected by the underground tunnels to the State Hospital. That is what enabled the canteen to be self-sustaining. Curtis Sinclair is absolutely right and the closure of the canteen is one more incredibly sad example of the Douglas’ Adminstration’s willful disregard ( and blatent misrepresentation) of the facts in order to pursue their own agenda. It is, simply, a travesty.

  3. Social comments and analytics for this post…

This post was mentioned on Twitter by vtdigger: Vermont State Hospital Canteen was more than just a job for Curtis Sinclair http://bit.ly/7tqYMu via #VT #BTV…

  4. The real culprit is Michael Hartman. He is the ultimate uncaring bureaucrat.
He should be the first one to go when Vermont get’s it new Governor.

  5. I went to the closing party, but I couldn’t bear to stay. It was too sad seeing the place closed down on the pretense of saving money. Congratulations VSH Director Rowe, Commissioner Hartman, Secretary Hofmann, and Governor Douglas. You’ve succeeded in taking something from the people who have nothing. Perhaps you should spend a couple of years caged up in VSH like I did. Then you might have a better perspective on the wrong that you have committed.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course.
