VTDigger Commenting FAQ

Thank you for participating in the VTDigger commenting community. Note that our comment policy is on every story on our site, above the comment section. We require commenters to use their real names, first and last. Not just initials or pseudonyms. We also expect commenters to be civil, respect diverse points of view and stick to the topic. Hate speech or ad hominem attacks are not allowed. Please read the following FAQ for answers to your questions about commenting.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMENT PLATFORM?

VTDigger uses the Disqus commenting platform. We do this to keep page loads fast, and to keep the conversation lively. Many top publishers use Disqus in order to enrich their commenting community. You can get help with Disqus here, or register for an account here. You can also register directly from any story on VTDigger, next to our comment form.

CAN I COMMENT WITHOUT SHARING PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH DISQUS?

Sure. Select VTDigger at the login dropdown in the comments box, and you can register through VTDigger directly, and keep your personal information out of the Disqus network.  Your comments will still appear the same as those of anyone else.  You will not be registered with Disqus, and will not be able to use this account on other sites using Disqus for commenting.  If registering with a third-party gives you pause, we recommend this option.

WHY DO I HAVE TO USE MY REAL NAME?

VTDigger’s real name policy has been a staple of our commenting platform since our site has launched. We enforce this as diligently as possible. The purpose of this policy is to encourage a civil discourse among neighbors who are willing to stand behind their identities and their comments. We have tried to create a safe zone for readers who wish to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects, regardless of where they stand.

MY REAL NAME IS NOT AVAILABLE ON DISQUS.

If your name has already been claimed when you attempt to register for Disqus, you may use a name that incorporates your name, such as Jane Doe 05201 or John Doe 1985.

DOES DISQUS OR VTDIGGER SELL MY PERSONAL INFORMATION?

We do not use your personal information. When moderating comments, we can see your email address, and the public IP address that your computer uses.  Here is the Disqus privacy policy, detailing what Disqus does with your data and how to limit the public visibility of some of your activity on the site.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DELETE MY DISQUS ACCOUNT?

If you decide Disqus isn’t for you, your comment(s) will continue to appear on VTDigger but will no longer be linked up to an aggregated profile.
