Mosquitoes can be more than a nuisance – not only do they take your blood and make you itch, they can also spread viral diseases such as West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis.
Aerial spraying of mosquito pesticide in Brandon and Whiting last week was effective, reducing by nearly half the number of mosquitoes captured in traps that are carriers of Eastern Equine Enchepalitis (EEE), according to officials from the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.
The Health Department recently confirmed the first two human cases of EEE in Vermont from the Addison and Rutland County area where mosquito pools recently tested positive for EEE and West Nile virus. Both individuals remain hospitalized.
The Vermont Department of Health announced today that West Nile virus was detected in mosquitoes collected on July 18 from a trap in Brandon.
