“In some ways, the story was too big to be told before,” journalist Christine Kenneally writes of her decade of research into claims of misconduct and murder at Burlington’s now-closed St. Joseph’s Orphanage. “Increased scrutiny only makes it bigger.”

The city has been without a leader since last June, when Chief Steven Locke decamped for South Burlington. LaChance’s appointment will have to be confirmed by the Burlington City Council, which could take action as soon as Monday, Weinberger said.
A pair of resolutions make it clear that the issue of police oversight will remain on the council’s agenda. And a draft ordinance outlines a possible path toward an enhanced role of the existing Police Commission.
The party previously held five of the Queen City council’s 12 seats and will now hold six. Progressives will control four seats and independents two.
Other questions on the ballot were approved, including charter changes allowing non-citizen legal residents to vote, an expansion of ranked choice, a carbon impact fee and others.
The city draws a false contrast between fossil fuels and renewables. Some renewables, such as solar, wind and geothermal, are low-carbon and clean; others are worse than fossil fuels.
