Library launches community challenges

Apr 16 2020, 1:47 PM

(Burlington, VT) The Fletcher Free Library has launched the Great Burlington Badge Challenge and Adventure Activities to engage community members of all ages. “The library holds reading challenges during the summer because it’s a fun way to encourage everyone to read. We realized this was a perfect time for some ‘summer’ fun!” says Teen Librarian Abby Kolosovskiy.

The challenges are inspired by libraries’ pivoting services to continue connecting the community through reading, learning, and sharing. Participants of all ages in the Badge Challenge choose from a list of activities developed by FFL staff. Adventure Activities feature non-screen activities for youth.

The Badge Challenge highlights the growing digital services offered by the Library. Participants can use Novelist to find books similar to past favorites or browse lists of recent award winners. Participants may explore a new language using Transparent Language, an online language learning tool available for free to FFL card holders. Patrons can search the FFL catalog for eBooks and eAudiobooks, and earn prizes just by listening. The Badge Challenge also includes making book recommendations. Participants can post fan art, tagging FFL social media, and see what others are creating at home. Featured work will appear on the Library’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

When a certain number of people complete a challenge, that badge levels up, and all participants receive a digital prize. By working together everyone can win. As the badge levels increase, the prizes become bigger, so inviting friends will help increase numbers. Every two weeks a raffle drawing of all participants will provide one lucky player with a gift card to a local business. For questions regarding the Badge Challenge email the Game Master Abby Kolosovskiy at akolosovskiy@burlingtonvt.gov.

Adventure Activities inspire families to try out screen-free adventures at home. Challenges such as engineering a bridge out of household materials, conducting a sink or float test, or creating a family flag motivate families to get creative at home while learning and working together. Participants who complete five activities will be entered into a raffle for a Phoenix Books gift card. Families can post photos of their creations to be featured on FFL social media. "I can't wait to see what family fun you're having! Let's be in touch” says Youth Services Librarian Rebecca Goldberg.

The Great Burlington Badge Challenge and Adventure Activities inspire Burlington community members of all ages to continue to create, learn, and share from home. Visit fletcherfree.org for more information. The Library’s new Chat website feature connects directly to a live librarian to answer questions and help access all FFL online resources.
