Colvin Hired to Lead Regional Commission

The Bennington County Regional Commission (BCRC) announced today that Bill Colvin, currently the organization’s assistant director and coordinator of community and economic development programs, will be taking the reins as executive director in the coming weeks. Jim Sullivan, the current executive director, is retiring after 30+ years at BCRC - 12 years as executive director. Colvin was offered the position following an extensive search process conducted by the BCRC’s Executive Committee. Colvin has been with the BCRC for over ten years, having been hired by current executive director, Jim Sullivan, to launch an economic development initiative to serve the region’s seventeen communities. Under Colvin’s direction, that effort has grown and diversified, leading to partnerships with economic development interests locally and across southern Vermont. Colvin has been involved in community, economic and real estate development work in Vermont since 1999.
The BCRC is one of eleven regional planning commissions in Vermont and one of only two to serve as the regional development corporation as well. The Commission is governed by appointed representatives from each member town and village, together with commissioners representing interest groups such as economic development, public health, energy, housing, and transportation. In addition to its historic role in providing comprehensive technical planning assistance to municipalities, the BCRC maintains staffed work programs in transportation, energy, public health, community and economic development, water quality, brownfields redevelopment, and solid waste planning and management.
Outgoing executive director, Sullivan, expressed confidence in Colvin’s ability to direct the BCRC going forward. “Bill has been instrumental in helping to shape the BCRC as a key resource for local governments, businesses, and residents of the region. Bill’s deep knowledge of the area and the relationships he has developed over his years of community service make him the ideal person to work with our outstanding staff, commissioners, and community leaders to advance a shared goal of improving the region’s economy and the quality of life for all residents.”
Colvin will assume the executive director role by November, with Sullivan remaining with the BCRC in an advisory capacity through the end of the year.

About BCRC:
The Bennington County Regional Commission (BCRC) was created, pursuant to 24 V.S.A. Section 4341, by the seventeen towns and villages it serves and works with and on behalf of those municipalities to build strong, resilient, and sustainable communities, to foster economic prosperity, and to promote a high quality of life for residents of the region.
This mission is accomplished through direct planning and community development assistance to town and village governments, through preparation and implementation of regional plans and studies, and through synergistic working relationships with local and regional organizations. The BCRC works cooperatively with local governments to establish and advance regional cohesiveness, actively advocate for adherence to adopted regional policies, and facilitate effective communication between local, state, and federal levels of government.
