“Black Experience VT” celebrates all shades of Black at Burlington’s Flynn Theater on Saturday, February 25th, 2023 from 5pm to 9pm

BURLINGTON, VT — January 24th, 2023:

“The Black Experience 2023” (BX23) is a holistic celebration of Vermont’s Black lived experience, and is a welcomed new addition to Burlington’s celebration of Black History Month. This is the second Black Experience event, following the Juneteenth celebration in 2022.

The free event takes place on February 25th, 2023 from 5pm to 9pm. It’s presented by nuwave, the Flynn Theater, and the City of Burlington, and features performances from local artists and speakers, and culminates in a fireside conversation between iconic activist and scholar Dr. Angela Davis, and Dr. Tricia Rose, Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University. The evening also includes a special performance by PHILADANCO!, the celebrated Philadelphia dance company that is renowned for its innovation, creativity, and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance.

The programming focuses on the three pillars of culture, community, and education, will be emceed by dancer and lifecoach, Christal Brown, and features the following performers and participants: Rajnii Eddins—Spoken Word Artist, Harmony Edosomwan—Founder of Harmony’s Kitchen, Jolivette Anderson-Douoning—Performance Poetry & Spoken Word Artist, Mikahely—Self-taught Musician, cRAIG mITCHELL—DJ, and Afrofuturist— Toussaint St. Negritude. Black-led community organizations will also be highlighted.

"There is great power in representation," said Emiliano Void of nuwave, "and we really felt that Black History Month was the perfect timing for an event that showcased the thriving Black communities present here in Vermont. The Black Experience is our small contribution to building, and celebrating, a more diverse and inclusive Vermont."
