“Black Experience VT 2023” Events to Include
Free Health Screenings by the
UVM Health Network at the
Cathedral Church of St. Paul
BURLINGTON, VT — February 8th, 2023:
While the featured performances and guest discussions of “The Black Experience 2023” will be shining a light on Vermont’s Black lived experience, the event will also offer free health screening to illuminate the importance of health care for Vermont’s Black and Brown folks.
On Saturday, February 25th, from 11:30-2:30, UVM Health Network is providing a variety of free tests and scans at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, VT; just down the road from The Flynn, where the evening programming of “The Black Experience 2023” will take place. Health services will include screenings for high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes, as well as information on other healthcare resources.
“As a health care system, we recognize and are dedicated to addressing the health disparities and inequities affecting Black and African American communities,” said Sunny Eappen, MD, President and CEO of the UVM Health Network. “The screenings and health information we’re offering as part of The Black Experience are a small but important step in connecting people with the knowledge and care they need to achieve their full health potential.”
These services are open to all Vermonters and Green Mountain Power is providing shuttle service with electric buses to, and from, the day’s events, with pickup and dropoff locations in Brattleboro, Montpelier, Rutland, and various Chittenden County locations.
“The Black Experience 2023” (BX23) is a holistic celebration of Vermont’s Black lived experience, and is a welcomed new addition to Burlington’s celebration of Black History Month.
The free event takes place on February 25th, 2023 from 5pm to 9pm. It’s presented by nuwave and local partners, and features performances from local artists and speakers, and culminates in a fireside conversation between iconic activist and scholar Dr. Angela Davis, and Dr. Tricia Rose, Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University. The evening also includes a special performance by PHILADANCO!, the celebrated Philadelphia dance company that is renowned for its innovation, creativity, and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance.
The organizers of the event urge interested attendees to register for their free tickets at flynnvt.org. Information about the health services, as well as the performances, is available at BlackExperienceVT.com
The event is still in need of sponsors. If you or your organization is interested in sponsorship, contact Emilliano Void at info@blackexperiencevt.com.
