Vermont’s winter school sports have been placed on hold for the time being because of a spike in Covid-19 cases.
Practices were scheduled to begin on Nov. 30, but Gov. Phil Scott announced Tuesday that school sports schedules have been postponed indefinitely. Recreational sports were canceled Nov. 14, and state officials decided that school and recreational sports should be treated similarly, since they pose the same coronavirus risks — lots of exertion, heavy breathing and body contact.
The heavy breathing is the biggest issue, since the virus spreads mainly through the air.
The University of Vermont has also postponed the start of its basketball and hockey seasons until Dec. 18.
The Vermont Principals’ Association, which regulates high school sports, has tentatively scheduled practices to begin Jan. 11, but that date hinges on the coronavirus situation. Games would start a few weeks after practices begin.
