Columnist David Moats writes sensitively (VTDigger, Nov. 24) about his Southern friend’s family attitudes. The love of a family history no matter the tragedy for others.

We lived in the Northwest and Southwest in the past decade. It became clear to me that the maturity of Americans is what must evolve. We have destroyed half of life on the planet in my 60 years and extractive capitalism — passing all costs to us taxpayers — persists.

My Black friends are no longer willing to tolerate the South and red states (most of which were Ku Klux Klan-run not long ago — maybe still). We either evolve/grow/mature or maybe secession truly is best. The red states can’t support themselves.

Maybe with the pressure, their obstinate will can be moved. Sometimes, you just have to grow up and put on your big person pants.
