After months of back-and-forth, the Green Mountain Unified School District voted on Thursday to keep the name as its high school’s moniker. The vote led to the resignations of the superintendent and two board members.
The school’s board of trustees approved a resolution Friday to officially name the honors college the Patrick Leahy Honors College.
The board determined that those rules cannot apply to private schools under Vermont law. But members said they hoped to revisit the question of private schools soon.
The school is changing its name in part because of the “unthinkable” alleged sexual abuse of children by priests under the bishop’s leadership.
The election, conducted by Australian ballot, was scheduled after nearly 40 residents of the Bennington County town signed a petition calling for the school’s closure.
In an open letter to university President Suresh Garimella, more than 150 faculty members raised “serious concerns about (his) leadership and trustworthiness.”
United Academics, which represents roughly 700 faculty members, says that the University of Vermont administration increased workloads without a corresponding pay bump.
