Killer in Danville murder-for-hire plot changes plea to guilty

Jerry Banks pleaded guilty to three counts related to the January 2018 death of Gregory Davis. The Colorado man admitted he was hired to pose as a cop and abduct Davis before killing him.


Unconditional release of Vermont student in school threat case prompts concerns at Minnesota college

Waylon Kurts, 21, is out on bail in Vermont without conditions in an alleged school threat case involving St. Olaf College in Minnesota. The college sent a letter to the school community this week to warn of the change of conditions.


Burlington City Council confirms Jon Murad as police chief

More than a year after rejecting Murad for the role, the council voted 8-4 in favor of giving him the job. He will be the city’s first official police chief since December 2019.

Burlington to pay $750K to settle police use-of-force lawsuit

Mayor Miro Weinberger announced in a press release on Friday that three brothers who sued the city for excessive force related to a 2018 incident will drop their lawsuit in exchange for the payment.

Thursday marked the first of several waves of evictions planned for this spring and summer, as the state winds down pandemic-era programs that have sheltered an estimated 80% of Vermont’s unhoused population in motels.


City of Burlington will settle police use-of-force lawsuit

The city council approved the settlement during a special meeting on Tuesday. Three brothers brought legal action against the city related to an excessive force incident involving Officer Jason Bellavance in 2018. The settlement still needs to be approved by a federal judge.
