Amid mass resignations, the sheriff’s department canceled its 120-hour-per-week patrol contract with Randolph. Now the town hopes to expedite the creation of its own police department.


Facing a crisis, House panel considers transforming property value reappraisal system

As drafted, the proposed system could transfer responsibility for updating property values — the basis for property taxes — from municipalities to the state and require reappraisals on a regular schedule. It would also impose a moratorium on the reappraisals that would otherwise be ordered in two-thirds of Vermont towns this year.

Lawsuit alleges mismanagement, sexual harassment and retaliation at Woodstock Inn

Filed by two former board members of the Woodstock Foundation against their former colleagues, the suit describes an abusive culture that was allegedly upheld by leadership of the Woodstock Inn and the nearby Billings Farm.


More than half of Orange County’s sheriff deputies will leave with the current sheriff next week

Eleven part- and full-time deputies and all five of the department’s administrative staffers, also called duty clerks, will no longer work for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department when George Contois takes over next week.


New arrest made in connection with November’s Valley Street raid in Springfield

James Hines, 53, was arrested last week and charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and crack cocaine. He’s the fifth person indicted on those charges. A sixth individual has been added to the indictment, but the person’s name is redacted.

Group says it received threats in advance of meeting to support equity in Randolph schools

Flat tire spike in Thetford blamed on sharp rocks meant to mitigate mud season

According to the town manager, road crews began using larger stones to repair roads after last year’s awful mud season. After a dozen residents complained of flat tires, the town will switch back to its old methods.
