The operator of one vehicle and a 7-year-old traveling in another vehicle died Saturday night following a head-on collision in Sheldon.

Vermont State Police said in a press release early Sunday morning that dispatchers were alerted to the accident on Route 105 near Lumbra Road around 9:15 p.m. Saturday. A preliminary investigation found that a Chevrolet Malibu traveling west on Route 105 crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with an Audi S5, which had been traveling east, according to police.

The crash caused the Malibu to catch fire.

Its driver, Nicholas Tanner, 40, of Highgate, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

The driver of the Audi, Chad Miles, 43, of Enosburg, and a passenger, Alisha Miles, 30, of Enosburg, were treated for minor injuries at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. A third occupant of that vehicle, 7-year-old Olivia Miles, also of Enosburg, was transported to hospital, where she later died.

Police said the crash remained under investigation.
