Vermont State Police are investigating a suspicious death in Brookfield, the agency said in a press release Friday night.

Police said they received a 911 call at about 5:45 p.m. reporting a deceased man outside a home at 8769 Vermont Route 14.

Officials received a separate 911 call around the same time concerning an erratic driver near the intersection of Route 14 and Route 65, police said in the release. After the vehicle stopped, the caller told authorities that the “driver appeared to have been shot.” The injured man reportedly said there was another victim who had been shot several miles away at a home on Route 14 in Brookfield.

Police said no one was in custody. They did not immediately identify either man and said the investigation was in its early stages.

According to police, the 911 caller brought the injured driver to Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. He was later transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where his condition was unknown.

The deceased man’s body was expected to be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy.
