We’re eight days into our Spring Member Drive, and we need your help. Our goal is to send 2,500 books to Vermont children who are low-income, rural or at-risk by May 31. Will you make a donation and send a book this Wednesday?
The first step to becoming an informed, engaged citizen is learning to read. But too many kids don’t have easy access to books. Sixty percent of low-income Vermont families have no children’s books at home.
With Mother’s Day coming up and Father’s Day around the corner, my mind turns to all of the in-depth coverage VTDigger provides about education, health care, environment, labor and child care. These reports, such as our child tax credit explainer, help parents and caretakers make informed decisions about issues that impact their lives and those of their loved ones.
It matters to us that Vermont’s children have the tools they need to become informed citizens. The Children’s Literacy Foundation, known as CLiF, has provided free and inspiring literacy programs and brand-new books to under-resourced children up to age 12 in almost 85% of communities in New Hampshire and Vermont. For many Vermont kids, the books they receive from CLiF are the first ones they own.
